CIBC is also overseen by a board of directors, which is the governing body of the bank as a financial services provider. The board is elected by stockholders, with members often selected for their expertise in a particular area or their industry connections.

As with many boards, the board at CIBC largely holds an advisory role, but some do have wide-reaching powers, duties, and responsibilities as stipulated by corporate law and government regulations, particularly in heavily regulated industries such as finance and pharma.

CIBC’s Organizational Structure

The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) operates with what appears to be a divisional organizational structure that enables efficient management and coordination of its different banking operations. In a divisional structure, people are grouped together based on the product or service they provide, not the work they do.

At the top of CIBC’s divisional organizational structure is the executive leadership team that we covered above. This includes the President and CEO who oversees the overall strategic direction and performance of the bank. Reporting directly to the CEO are key executives responsible for different divisions and functions, such as the Executive Vice-President and Chief Legal Officer and the Senior Executive Vice-President and Group Head, Capital Markets

Immediately below the executive team level, CIBC is organized into various divisions and departments that focus on different areas of banking and financial services. These divisions include personal banking, business banking, wealth management, and corporate services. Each division is headed by a President or General Manager who oversees its operations and performance and reports to the executive leadership team.

Within each of these divisions, there are further reporting relationships and managerial hierarchies. Managers and team leaders oversee specific departments or functional areas, such as retail banking, lending, investments, customer service, and compliance. They are responsible for leading their teams, executing strategies, and delivering high-quality financial solutions to clients.

CIBC’s organizational structure fosters clear lines of authority, effective communication, and collaboration across its various divisions and departments. It enables the bank to deliver a comprehensive range of banking services, tailored to the needs of its individual, business, and institutional clients.
