Founded in 2011 in Kelowna, Canada, Pela is the manufacturer of the world’s first compostable smart phone case – the ‘Pela Case’ – that is made from renewable resources. The company was founded with a strong environmental ethos at its core, and its mission is to reduce the amount of plastic waste produced by the planet – “one phone case at a time.”
While Pela is known for its compostable smartphone case, the eco-friendly company develops a wide range of products made from environmentally friendly materials. Its ultimate goals are to:
- Reduce the amount of plastic waste created by consumer products
- Alleviate our dependency on non-renewable fossil fuels and oil-based plastics
- Educate people about plant-based, sustainable alternatives
Pela began as a passion project by its founder, materials scientist Jeremy Lang. According to Lang, he witnesses first-hand the damage that plastic was doing to our oceans while holidaying in Hawaii in 2008. Lang spent years experimenting with new materials to find an alternative to plastic that could be used in everyday products.
The company’s mission to make sustainable products the new normal began with one that most of us hold everyday – phone cases.
Pela’s compostable phone case is made from Flaxstic™, a plant-based bioplastic that’s manufactured in Canada. This is what makes the phone case compostable. Manufacturing of the phone case also requires up to 50% less non-renewable energy and produces up to 60% fewer greenhouse gases than manufacturing with traditional plastic polymers.
Flax fiber – the main component in Pela’s phone cases – is also naturally strong and has shock absorbing qualities, making it perfect for its use case as a protective shell for smartphones. Also under Pela’s umbrella of products are:
- Habitat, a plastic-free deodorant, and
- Barxby, an environmentally friendly dog shampoo.
Today, Pela pulls in a mid-8 figure sum in annual revenue. The company achieved a roughly U$100 million valuation in its latest round of funding and attracted investors that included Marcy Ventures, the venture capital firm owned by Jay-Z.
Pela’s organizational structure
Pela operates with a traditional hierarchy-based organizational structure.
CEO and co-founder Matthew Bertulli can be found at the top of the company’s organizational structure as Pela’s ultimate leader. Several C-level executives then fall below Bertulli, such as COO Jeff Keen, with authority then flowing downwards throughout different departments and teams.
Hierarchical structures like this are ideal in larger companies that have a focus on growth. This is because they are suited to helping make the organizational planning process more efficient. When you look at a traditional organizational hierarchy, it’s very easy to see who fits where, who’s responsible for what, and where there are potential skills gaps.
Hierarchical organizational charts also promote operational efficiency by giving specialist expert workers with niche skills – such as Pela’s materials scientists – more scope to carry out their tasks and see how their work is contributing to the organization’s long-term success.
