Overview
Established in 1930, the Biological Sciences Division is UChicago’s largest academic division, comprising 10 basic science and 14 clinical departments.
Today, it constitutes one of the most unique communities within an academic environment: a single division that delivers undergraduate, graduate, medical, and postgraduate biological sciences education together with outstanding patient care and world-renowned research.
Business Challenge
Prior to discovering Organimi, the Biological Sciences Division at the University of Chicago faced challenges with their static organizational charting process using SmartArt in PowerPoint. This method was cumbersome and lacked the flexibility needed for dynamic organizational planning. Anna Gomberg, Administrative Director in the division, needed a solution that could provide a comprehensive view of the organization’s structure while accommodating the flexibility of roles within it. She required a tool that would allow her to access all necessary information in a single place. “You need to be able to sort of pivot from different perspectives, but also retain a lot of information since everybody has first and secondary appointments”, Anna shared.
Anna GombergI’m able to set it and forget it. It’s there, it exists, and I don’t have to worry about saving it in multiple places.
Solution
Anna discovered Organimi through a Google search and found it to be the ideal solution for their organizational charting needs. Organimi’s cloud-based platform offered the flexibility and features Anna required, including the ability to import data from spreadsheets, zoom functionality, and intuitive charting features. Unlike design tools like InDesign or Photoshop, Organimi provided a dedicated charting solution tailored to their specific needs. Anna shared that it was super easy to get onboarded, having faced no challenges. “The software has the right amount of flexibility and has allowed me to reflect on our organization in a positive way”, states Gomberg.
Benefits
Since implementing Organimi, the Biological Sciences Division at the University of Chicago has undergone a remarkable shift towards organizational efficiency and strategic planning. Organimi has quickly become an indispensable tool for Anna and her team, thanks to its user-friendly interface and comprehensive features. With functionalities like private and public sharing, they’ve seamlessly connected remote teams, making org charts easily accessible and saving valuable time while boosting overall operational effectiveness. “The sharing feature has been great for being able to take the chart out of Organimi for easy access for those who don’t use the platform” Anna says.
Particularly in strategic planning, Organimi has played a pivotal role, aiding in launching new programs and meticulously organizing roles within the Department of Medicine. Its intuitive design and flexibility has empowered Anna and her team to gain profound insights into their organizational structures, leading to smoother operations and clearer insights. Looking forward, Anna envisions Organimi as a crucial asset for the division’s growth, foreseeing its continued use in capacity building, onboarding, and visual mapping. Based on their positive experience, she enthusiastically recommends Organimi to other organizations, emphasizing its ability to enhance efficiency and foster collaboration.
Anna plans to continue advocating for Organimi within the organization to further enhance organizational capacity building and streamline onboarding processes for new employees. “On the administration level, we’re constantly trying to figure out who’s doing what, and Organimi helps with that, as well as getting new employees onboarded.”, Anna shares. She envisions Organimi playing a crucial role in future growth and success by providing a digital platform for visualizing team structures and identifying areas for improvement.
