Overview
A leader in the electronic component distribution market, Sourceability is known for its innovation, commitment to quality, and logistics expertise. The company’s success depends on its ability to collaborate efficiently across its global distribution centers and regional offices.
As the company grew, it needed an org chart solution that could scale, serve as a planning and new hire onboarding aid, and help its remote workforce communicate internally and with hundreds of suppliers and contract manufacturers.
Business Challenge
As Sourceability grew, the team needed org charts that were flexible enough to serve multiple purposes. “We were hiring many new people and needed a good tool to help them understand our organization and the key players,” says Baldur Rensch, Sourceability’s Chief Technical Officer. “We also wanted a solution that would help with planning and reorganization — a way to visualize and evaluate multiple options.”
The Sourceability team used various non-dedicated tools to create its org charts, including Powerpoint and other diagramming tools. Those charts were time-consuming to build and maintain and limited in what data they could portray. “Our legacy diagramming solution was a major pain point,” says Rensch. “Sometimes, it felt like we were moving things around pixel by pixel. It was inefficient, and the process was frustrating.”
Sourceability operated functionally as two separate units — sales and digital services — with some overlap in roles and responsibilities. The legacy org charts couldn’t capture these complexities, rendering them ineffective in the planning process.
Baldur RenschThe feedback we get from new employees is very positive — they think the detailed org charts are awesome.
Solution
Rensch conducted a Google search for a dedicated org chart solution that would meet Sourceability’s specific requirements. “It had to be easy to use, yet flexible and scalable,” he says. “We also needed a tool that was economical to adopt, with pricing that proportionately scaled as we used it.” Organimi provided the capabilities Rensch was looking for and offered a free trial of the solution.
Rensch found Organimi simple to implement and use. His org charts soon came to the attention of Sourceability’s HR team, who also adopted Organimi. While Rensch used Organimi’s charts primarily for organizational planning, the HR team published the charts to simplify internal communications, especially for remote team members during the pandemic.
The charts also proved invaluable for helping to onboard new hires. “The Organimi org charts are a great tool to give new employees a quick overview of the organization,” says Rensch.
Benefits
With Organimi, the Sourceability team has reduced the time and effort required to create and maintain company-wide org charts. “Our HR team was quick to adopt Organimi and found it easy to work with,” says Rensch.
“Our big use case now for the Organimi charts is informational,” he continues. “HR keeps them updated and distributes them to the entire organization. That helps our employees quickly identify the right internal resources they need and improves collaboration.”
The new hire onboarding experience has also improved with Organimi. “The feedback we get from new employees is very positive — they think the detailed org charts are awesome,” says Rensch.
Rensch continues to find the Organimi charts valuable in the planning process. “We’re always trying to optimize our organizational structure,” he says. “With Organimi, I can see imbalances in things like the number of direct reports and can move people and roles around to help understand the impact of any potential changes.”
Rensch is also looking forward to exploring the capabilities of the recently-launched Organimi Version 7.0. “I like to see things a certain way,” he says. “The ability to pull in employee photos and more detailed profile information will make our org charts even better.”
