Overview

Whether in the courthouse, the statehouse, or the community, nonprofit Nebraska Appleseed is a strong advocate for the citizens of Nebraska. Through legal advocacy and social justice work, Appleseed fights to provide every Nebraskan the opportunity to achieve the American Dream.

As the organization grew and restructured, the administrative team grappled with the burden of creating, updating, and distributing comprehensive org charts.

Business Challenge

The legacy Nebraska Appleseed org charts were created using Powerpoint, and it was difficult and time-consuming for the admin team to keep up with the frequent changes and additions. Appleseed also operated with a matrix-style organization, which could not be represented well using Powerpoint “It was a lot of work and not the best use of my time,” says Kristine Hull, Appleseed’s Administration Senior Director. “The frequent restructures made it a real challenge.”

The team used Google’s G Suite (now Google Workspace) to post and distribute information to the entire organization. However, with the delays in updating the org charts, people were downloading and distributing outdated charts. “As a grant-funded organization, we’re applying for grants on a frequent basis,” says Hull. “Our grant coordinator needed access to updated charts for those applications, and we often we had to reconfigure everything.”

Solution

Hull discovered Organimi through Google research. “I was happy to find Organimi,” she says. “It immediately made things much easier. I especially liked how it works in real time.

Using Organimi, Hull and her team could quickly create, revise, and distribute Appleseed’s org charts. “Once you created a chart, you didn’t have to do it again,” she says. “It was easy to make changes, even if we were restructuring. It’s almost like Organimi was built specifically for what I was looking for.”

Organimi also made it easy for Hull to capture matrix reporting in her charts, and she could customize and add additional employee information when required.

Hull began using Organimi’s latest release, Version 7.0, soon after it launched. She found the transition to be smooth. “There were a few changes to figure out,” she says. “But the Version 7.0 charts feel a little cleaner. Overall, I’m very happy with the new release.”

Benefits

Using Organimi has saved Hull and her team considerable time and effort compared to their legacy Powerpoint solution. “When we have a new position, our org charts are so much easier to update,” Hull says. “Before Organimi, we’d have to reconfigure everything. So that alone has made it worth the cost.”

The Organimi charts have also helped enable new team members who are onboarding. New hires can familiarize themselves with the organization and quickly find the contacts they need.

Providing the Appleseed team with current charts has paid dividends when applying for new grants. “Now our grant coordinator always has access to the most up-to-date information,” says Hull. “It’s just a link that anyone can go to and get the most current org chart version.”

Moving forward, Hull is looking into using Version 7.0’s enhanced features to create more specialized charts to reflect board members’ participation in multiple committees. “Organimi has made creating and distributing our org charts much simpler,” says Hull. “Overall, I’m very pleased with it.”
