Overview
For over 50 years, the National Center for Youth Law (NCYL) has worked to change government systems and policies that impact the safety and success of children. These efforts include education, juvenile justice, immigration, and even suing the federal government!
Faced with rapid growth and onboarding remote new employees throughout the pandemic, NCYL relied on Organimi to help the organization communicate, collaborate, and bring new hires quickly up to speed.
Business Challenge
While NCYL was a long-time Organimi user, the pandemic created new challenges for the organization. Remote workers, unable to collaborate face-to-face, depended on detailed, current org charts to help them effectively engage with their co-workers.
This challenge was even more acute for new hires. The NCYL team almost doubled in size during the pandemic. New employees needed a clear understanding of the organization’s structure and a single source of current, detailed employee role and contact information.
Many NCYL staff members also work cross-functionally, and the HR team needed a way to capture those cross-functional relationships on the org chart. “Even though people aren’t on the same team,” says Karla James, NCYL’s Deputy Director, Operations and Finance, “it’s helpful to categorize them that way.”

Solution
Using Organimi, the NCYL team was able to quickly update its org charts as new hires joined the organization. Every employee, including new hires, could access the update charts by simply bookmarking a link. “When onboarding new staff, one of the first things we did was show them how to bookmark the org chart link,” says James. “It put the information at their fingertips.”
That information included titles, email addresses, telephone numbers, and photographs when available. “That ease of use was critical, especially since we were hiring so many people,” says James.
The NCYL team also used Organimi’s color-coding features to help differentiate groups and reflect cross-functional relationships. “If we had people on different teams that did, for example, litigation, we could use a specific color to identify them all,” explains James. “It made it much simpler for team members with similar functions to identify — and collaborate with — their counterparts.”
Benefits
Using the Organimi org charts minimized the time and effort needed for the NCYL team to create, update and distribute the charts. “A single HR specialist can keep the charts current, even with all our recent staff changes,” says James.
The org charts have also made new hire onboarding more efficient, helping new employees to become productive faster. “That organizational view and availability of contact information are critical for new hires,” says James. “Working remotely, it may be some time until they meet each other, so the org charts are very beneficial.”
The additional information captured in the charts, including color-coding cross-functional relationships, has helped longer-tenured staff as well. As collaboration has become more efficient, James and the HR team are looking to incorporate even more data into their charts. “We haven’t integrated LinkedIn data yet, but we’re confident it won’t be difficult,” says James
It’s hard to quantify the positive impact Organimi’s had for us,” she concludes. “Overall, it’s been very helpful and has helped our team a lot.”
