Overview

Launched in 2019, Flowcode is a direct-to-consumer enterprise that creates brand connections through QR codes and mobile landing pages. During the pandemic, several celebrities (including Kim Kardashian and Ellen DeGeneres) used Flowcode to support frontline Mount Sinai Hospital healthcare workers with a direct-to-donate campaign.

As a fast-growing organization, Flowcode needed an org chart solution that could reflect its non-traditional, ever-changing organizational structure.

Business Challenge

Flowcode experienced high growth during the early stages of the pandemic, with almost all employees working remotely. While much of Flowcode’s organizational structure was straightforward, many team members and managers were project-based, which meant they could appear in multiple places on the org chart. At times, Flowcode also needed to capture non-employees (contractors and freelancers) in its charts.

Org charts created with traditional tools like Powerpoint were limited in the information they could capture and time-consuming to build and maintain. Lauren Ford, Flowcode’s Employee Experience Manager, explains: “We needed a solution that was easy to work with and also very flexible.”

Solution

While the Flowcode HR team appreciated Organimi’s cost-effectiveness and ease of use, the solution’s ability to reflect the organization in multiple ways won them over. “In the past, we struggled with org charts,” says Ford. “Our teams often work outside the box, and traditional charts didn’t capture that effectively. Our leadership team needed to visually express the organization in several ways and show how all the different connections fit together.” Ford and her team also used Organimi’s color-coding features to help make the charts even more visually intuitive.

At times, the Flowcode team needed to move entire groups or departments in the org chart. These movements were beneficial for leadership when exploring ‘what-if’ scenarios and planning for future growth opportunities. Organimi’s ‘drag and drop’ capabilities made completing these changes straightforward.

Organimi’s in-app help features made configuring and maintaining its charts much easier for the Flowcode team. “The pop-ups in the software really helped explain some of the functionality,” says Ford.

Benefits

Using Organimi, the Flowcode team was able to reduce the time and effort required to create and maintain its org charts. Organimi’s ease of use made all the difference. “I inherited the tool, and even though I wasn’t involved in the initial implementation, I found it very easy to work with,” says Ford.

Even as the Flowcode team created non-traditional org charts, Organimi helped it capture much more information about individuals and reporting relationships than would be possible with legacy tools. This increased the charts’ utility for all stakeholders, whether for planning, internal communications, or learning the organization for new hires.
As Flowcode grew and evolved, the team found Organimi to be highly flexible in reflecting different organizational structures and dynamic reporting relationships (such as dual reporting). Changes could be made quickly, and Organism’s color coding helped users to visualize those changes.

This flexibility made the Organimi charts particularly useful to the management team for planning. “Our leadership really challenges the limits of conventional org charts,” says Ford. “But they understand the power of visual representations, and that’s where Organimi shines.”

“I imagine we’re not the only start-up to break the traditional org chart,” muses Ford. “With Organimi, we can find ways to take our vision for the Flowcode structure and capture it in an org chart.”
