Overview

In 2020, CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort) took on a new challenge that dramatically altered the make-up of the organization. CORE began coordinating COVID-19 testing beginning in Las Angeles, an initiative that expanded quickly to several states and countries.

As a result, CORE hired several hundred new employees in a short time. Employee onboarding and internal collaboration became more complex, and CORE needed a flexible, easy-to-manage org chart solution to help address those challenges.

Business Challenge

CORE’s explosive growth meant that employees needed a company-wide org chart to help understand and navigate the organization. Instead, as CORE grew, each department created its own org charts using a range of office and manual tools. There was no consistency of information or formats across these org charts, and they were often outdated. Instead of facilitating collaboration, they became a source of confusion. “We needed a way to pull together the entire company on paper so that everyone had a live view of the organization,” says Jeff Duck, CORE’s Deputy Site Manager — Dodgers Stadium COVID Testing. “I took the project on.”

As a nonprofit, CORE had a limited administrative budget, and Duck had to find a flexible, scalable, yet cost-effective solution.

Solution

Duck found Organimi by researching org chart solutions on Google. “Organimi’s ease of use made a huge difference,” he says. He began by creating a chart capturing only key team members, but the chart grew to include almost 250 employees in two months.

As a new user, Duck implemented Organimi’s latest release, Version 7.0. He found he could quickly add employees — and all their relevant information — into CORE’s org charts. Distributing the charts was also simple. Any employee could click on a link and instantly have the most current chart in hand. “Our staff could get updated charts whenever they wanted,” says Duck, “and take whatever information they needed from them.”

Using Organimi, the CORE team reduced the time it took to create the organization’s org charts — including the duplication of effort by building multiple departmental charts. And by using a standardized Orgamini format, the charts are less confusing and simpler for staff to use.

The updated Organimi charts are also readily accessible through a single link, ensuring CORE employees have the most current information in hand when collaborating with other team members.

Duck plans to expand Organimi’s use by adding more employee information to CORE’s org charts. Another project involves integrating Organimi with Office 365. “We’re transitioning to Office 365 across the organization,” he says. “We’ll be looking at how we can effectively move data between the two tools.”

CORE’s senior leadership team has also embraced the Organimi org charts. “They were excited to see the entire organization in a single view,” says Duck. “The feedback was excellent — they were blown away.”
